چکیده

The nail, a fast-growing organ, is sensitive to changes in the germinal matrix, and, as would be expected, a severe systemic illness can affect the growth rate of the ungual matrix, which occasionally results in temporary growth arrest (Beau’s line). Thus, recovery from growth arrest can be associated with onychomadesis, also called nail shedding, a condition that indicates the separation of the nail plate from the nail matrix area, after a (4to 8-week) period of latency after systemic insult. The length in the long axis of the furrow represents the exact duration of the disease that has affected the matrix. The keratinized nail bed alone fills the gap between the old and new nail plate. In the case of onychomadesis, its manifestations are transient and resolve within several months.

Retronychia Treated with Proximal Nail Avulsion; two Cases Successfully Treated with this Technique and the First cases of Retronychia Occurring After Chemical Matricectomy

We describe three cases of retronychia; a chronic case where total nail avulsion had to be performed since the inflammation persisted after proximal nail avulsion and the first two cases of retronychia on an early clinical stage successfully treated with partial nail avulsion. We also describe the first two cases of retronychia appearing after a chemical matricectomy, occurring on the same pati...

Onychomadesis: A rare adverse effect in early-period valproic acid therapy.

Valproic acid is an effective, frequently used anticonvulsant drug. Typical adverse effects include weight gain, hair loss, and nausea. Hyperpigmentation, onycholysis, and onychomadesis are nail changes that can be seen after valproic acid use. Changes occur at the distal and proximal portions of the nail bed in onycholysis and onychomadesis, respectively. Onychomadesis is a very rare disease o...
